Save Energy with A/C Coil Cleaning

Save Energy with A/C Coil Cleaning

It’s important to have clean A/C coils. Dirty evaporator coils force the A/C compressor to run longer and work harder than necessary. This can leads to higher energy usage, ultimately decreasing the component lifespan.  The easiest and most cost-effective thing you can do for energy efficiency is to call a professional HVAC company to service and clean your unit annually.

Why Are Clean A/C Coils Important?

The U.S. Department of Energy says, “a dirty condenser coil can increase compressor energy consumption by 30%.”  Dirty condenser and evaporator coils can increase HVAC energy usage and the associated utility costs significantly.  The airflow is decreased with a dirty evaporator coil, leading to reduced heat transfer and a decline in the dehumidification process.  Efficiently working air conditioners must transfer heat from inside your home or office to outside in order to keep the space cool.  The reduced efficiency of heat transfer can result in problems such as poor performance in cooling, frozen evaporator coils, and overheating the compressor.

Clean A/C Coils to Save Energy

All HVAC systems, old or new, can benefit from regular coil inspections and cleaning.  Have your HVAC system inspected and serviced annually, older systems might require two services per year.  Check air filters at least once a month and replace as necessary to keep evaporator coils clean.  Dust and debris can accumulate on the evaporator if a dirty air filter is in place.  This can reduce air flow and cause other problems.  The condenser unit must be kept clear of vegetation such as debris, trash, tall grass, and overhanging trees or bushes.  Clear out an area at least two feet around the unit.  This helps keep the condenser coils clean.

It’s important to have a professional clean the evaporator and condenser coils due to the delicacy of the fins.  However, you can clean condenser coils between maintenances with the use of a hose. Gently rinsing the coils after shutting off the power & remove all large debris from the condenser unit.
