Cleaner Indoor Air Between Canyons

Cottonwood Heights Air Purification for Inversion and Smoke Weeks

When the valley air turns bad, Cottonwood Heights families close the windows and wait it out. We treat the air at your HVAC system, so every room gets filtered, UV-treated air while you do.

Better air in every bedroom

A portable unit cleans one room. A system at the air handler treats the air going to each bedroom, the basement family room and the kitchen at once. On a January morning when the valley looks gray from the bench, the whole house benefits, not one corner.

Less dust while the house is shut

Winters in Cottonwood Heights keep the furnace running for months. Better filtration at the air handler catches more of the dust and dander that would otherwise settle on furniture and blow out of registers, so the dusting cloth comes out less often.

Fewer smells that linger

Cooking, pets and a closed-up basement leave odors that hang around during inversions and smoke days. UV-C at the coil helps keep it cleaner, and the filter upgrade handles particles, so the house smells fresher when the windows have to stay closed.

  • Lower costOne system at the HVAC replaces buying, powering and changing filters on a portable purifier in every room. The in-home estimate is free, and the price is written down before we install anything.
  • Simpler and quickerInstallation happens at the air handler you already have, with no rooms to rearrange. Office hours run Monday to Saturday until 7pm, so scheduling fits around work and school.
  • Higher qualityWe use ozone-free UV lamps and match filtration to what your blower can handle. Our 30+ years of experience and insured, vetted, quality-checked technicians stand behind each install.

Indoor Air Quality Experts

Your Air May Be Circulating More Than You Think

Even after cleaning your ducts, airborne contaminants like mold spores, bacteria, and allergens continue to circulate through your home every time your HVAC system runs.

Airborne Contaminants

Bacteria, viruses, and mold spores circulating through your air

Allergy & Respiratory Issues

Triggers for asthma, coughing, and irritation

Odors & Stale Air

Persistent smells caused by microbial growth

Hidden HVAC Buildup

Moisture inside your system creates the perfect environment for mold

Stop Contaminants at the Source — Not Just in the Air

Whole home air purification systems use UV-C light installed inside your HVAC system to neutralize harmful microorganisms before they circulate through your home.

As air passes through your system, the UV light disrupts the DNA of mold, bacteria, and viruses, preventing them from reproducing or causing harm.

Unlike standard filters that only trap particles, UV purification actively neutralizes contaminants at the source.

Two Types of Protection:

  • Coil sterilization (prevents mold growth at the source)
  • Air purification (treats air as it circulates)

Why Act Now

Cleaner Air. Healthier Home. Better Performance.

Over time, moisture and debris inside your HVAC system create an environment where mold and bacteria thrive. UV purification continuously targets these contaminants, helping protect your air and your system.

  • Kills Mold & Bacteria
  • Improves Air Quality
  • Helps With Allergies & Breathing
  • Eliminates Odors
  • Boosts HVAC Efficiency

I am very appreciative of Dave's prompt service, not only to analyze and clean ducts and vents with at least 20 years of dust buildup, but also to provide immediate mold remediation upon the discovery of water damage underneath our washer and dryer!

Dave was very friendly and helpful. He was very honest and upfront. They are competitively priced and quick. He was able to test my house within a couple of days. The lab results take 5 days, but that's out of their hands. They can order a rush to have the lab grow the results a little faster if needed. He did a great job cleaning my ventilation system which was important since I have bird fancier's lung.

I'm not sure why all the reviews are bad because we had an awesome experience they removed, treated and sealed so much mold and cleaned our very dirty air ducts they were also extremely polite. Good people. The smell from the disinfectant does last longer then they say though, would keep that in mind. We stayed outside for awhile but the benefit of it outweighed the inconvenience

Whole Home Air Purification in Cottonwood Heights

Living in Cottonwood Heights

Cottonwood Heights sits on the east bench close to the canyons, but it is still part of the Salt Lake Valley. When a winter inversion sets in, cold air and pollution stay trapped until a storm clears them, and the city's homes close up along with everyone else's.

That is when the air inside matters most. Our whole home air purification works at the HVAC system, with ozone-free UV-C lamps and better filtration, so every room the ducts reach gets treated air. There is no purifier to buy, place and maintain in each bedroom.

Cottonwood Heights at a Glance: Air, Homes and Local Resources

Cottonwood Heights became a city on January 14, 2005, after residents voted to incorporate in 2004. It calls itself the city between the canyons, with Big Cottonwood Canyon (SR-190) and Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210) rising from its eastern edge and I-215 along its northern border.

Useful local resources

  • AirView map: the Salt Lake County Health Department's real-time map shows air quality by neighborhood.
  • County Air Quality Bureau: runs the vehicle emissions program and the wood-burning regulation, and takes calls at 385-468-3837 on weekdays.
  • The Old Mill: the stone shell of the Cottonwood Paper Mill, built in 1883 at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and gutted by fire in 1893, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Most homes here date from the 1970s, with a census median year built of 1978. Furnaces and coils in houses of that age vary widely, which is why we check the equipment before recommending a whole home system.

Indoor air during inversions and smoke

The Central Wasatch Commission describes an inversion as cold, dense air trapped under a warmer layer, with the valley's mountains holding it in place. Pollution keeps building until a storm moves through. On December 4, 2019, the Salt Lake Valley had the worst air quality in the nation. Cottonwood Heights residents breathe that same air when they step outside.

Indoors, the problem shifts. The house is sealed, the furnace recirculates the same air, and cooking, pets and everyday dust all stay inside. Summer wildfire smoke brings a second closed-window season. Salt Lake County Health Department advice is to switch central systems to recirculate and turn off any outdoor air intake on bad air days.

How a whole home system works

We install the system at the air handler, so it treats the air every time the blower runs. UV-C lamps shine on the coil and the moving air, and an upgraded filter captures particles. The EPA recommends a filter rated MERV 13 or higher when the system can handle it, and we check your blower and filter rack before recommending one.

The UV-C lamps work on what grows on damp surfaces. The cooling coil stays wet through summer air conditioning, and keeping it cleaner helps the system move air and keeps musty smells from starting there. Filtration handles the particles: dust, pet dander, pollen and the fine smoke that slips indoors during fire season.

  • Treats every room the ductwork reaches
  • No units to place, plug in or move between rooms
  • Ozone-free UV lamps
  • Works with your existing furnace and air conditioner when they are in sound condition

What to expect, honestly

The EPA points out that a central system only filters air while the blower runs, which is often a modest part of the day. We may suggest running the fan more during inversions and smoke events. We also tell you what purification does not do. It does not change outdoor air, and it is not a medical treatment. The aim is less dust and fewer odors in the air your household breathes.

The EPA also warns against air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, a lung irritant. Our UV lamps are ozone-free, which is one reason we chose them.

Upkeep is simple. UV lamps are replaced on a schedule, and the EPA suggests changing most HVAC filters every 60 to 90 days, or sooner if they look heavily soiled. During a long Cottonwood Heights inversion or a smoky August, check the filter more often, since it works harder while the house is closed up.

Homes we work in across Cottonwood Heights

About seven in ten homes here are detached houses, and many have a forced-air furnace in the basement. We also install in townhomes and condos with a furnace closet. Before quoting, we look at the system's age, the filter slot and the condition of the coil. If the ducts or coil need cleaning first, we say so, because purification works best on a clean system.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What affects the cost of whole home air purification in Cottonwood Heights?

The main factors are your HVAC system's size, the kind of filter rack it has and whether the coil or ducts need attention first. A townhome with a compact furnace closet is simpler than a large split-level with a basement air handler serving three floors. We look at the equipment during a free in-home visit and give you a written price.

When is the best time to install air purification in Cottonwood Heights?

Early fall works well for most homes. It puts the system in place before furnace season and the winter inversions that keep Cottonwood Heights houses closed for weeks. Late spring is a second good window, ahead of summer air conditioning and wildfire smoke. We can install at any point in the year if your timing is different.

Does my Cottonwood Heights HOA or condo board need to approve an install?

Because the system goes inside your existing air handler, there is usually nothing visible from outside. In a Cottonwood Heights townhome or condo, though, HVAC equipment may fall under your association's rules, so check your governing documents or ask the board before installation. We can describe the equipment in writing for them. We do not give legal advice on association rules.

Does air purification help on inversion days in Cottonwood Heights?

It addresses the air inside your home, not outside. During an inversion, Salt Lake Valley air stays trapped until a storm clears it, and most Cottonwood Heights families keep their windows shut. A whole home system filters and UV-treats the air the furnace recirculates, which means less dust and fewer odors indoors. It is not a medical treatment, and we do not present it as one.

Is the UV in your system safe? I have read about ozone.

The EPA warns against air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, which irritates the lungs, and notes that some UV devices without proper lamp coatings can emit it. The lamps we install in Cottonwood Heights homes are ozone-free. They sit inside the air handler, out of sight, where they treat the coil and the moving air. It is a fair question to ask about any purifier.

What should I do with my Cottonwood Heights HVAC during wildfire smoke?

Local guidance from the Salt Lake County Health Department is to keep windows closed, switch central air to recirculate and turn off any outdoor air option for the time being. Limit swamp cooler use, since it pulls in outside air. Running the system fan helps the filter catch more particles. The county's AirView map shows conditions in your Cottonwood Heights neighborhood.

Can you add whole home purification to an older Cottonwood Heights furnace?

Often, yes. Cottonwood Heights homes run on furnaces of every age, from recent replacements to units that have seen many winters. We check the blower, the filter slot and the coil first. If the equipment cannot handle a higher MERV filter, we tell you and recommend the best filter it can take, alongside the UV lamps.

Should I clean my ducts before adding air purification in Cottonwood Heights?

If the ducts are dusty, yes. Purification treats air moving through the system, but years of settled debris in trunk lines and runs will keep shedding into it. In a Cottonwood Heights home built near the city's 1978 median, the ductwork may be decades old. We look at both during the estimate and tell you whether cleaning first is worth it.
