Physical Signs & Symptoms of Mold Exposure
By Christeena Satterfield
Mold is common and can grow on any moist surface, both indoors and outdoors. Similarly, to any allergy, mold allergy symptoms are triggered by an immune response. When microscopic mold spores are inhaled, your body recognizes them as invaders and develop antibodies to destroy them.
Since an immune response was activated, even after the exposure has passed your body will produce antibodies that act in a way of remembering the invader. Sometimes this can result in a more rapid and exaggerated response. This triggers another response by releasing histamine. This causes itchy and watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and other allergy symptoms.
Mold allergies have similar signs and symptoms of other upper respiratory allergies and cold illnesses.
Some signs and symptoms of mold exposure to be aware of:
- Sneezing/sometimes sneezing fits
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Cough and nasal drip
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Itchy and watery eyes
- Itchy nose and throat
- Dry and scaly skin
If these symptoms persist, consult a doctor. Most allergic responses aren’t serious but can be more serious to those with compromised immune systems or respiratory illnesses.
Risk Factors Associated with Mold Exposure
Hereditary allergies and asthma will make you more susceptible to developing mold allergies or worsen existing mold allergy symptoms. Living in a house with high humidity may increase your exposure to mold. Indoor humidity shouldn’t be above 50%. Mold can grow anywhere if the conditions are favorable – usually moist surfaces. Exposure can come from mold build-up in your house, even if you can’t see it. Always properly ventilate your house. Read more here for tips on preventing the growth of mold.
