Mold Growth in Hotels – A Mold Inspection Can Keep Business Running Smooth & Your Guests Safe

By Christeena Satterfield

mold growthMold, it’s a word that will make most people cringe.  Don’t let mold ruin your hotels reputation.  It only takes one small mold colony and one bad review to give people a reason to lack confidence in your hotel and ultimately the hotel ends up losing money.  As a hotel, it’s important to keep your guests happy, satisfied, and healthy.  Mold growth is a serious concern when it comes to the health of your guests.  Take preventative measures to ensure you and your guests are happy.

Signs of Mold Growth

Often times it can be difficult to detect mold growth, you can’t always see the mold colony.  Mold reproduces by microscopic spores.  These spores are easily transported to any surface via an air stream.  All the spores need to survive is a suitable, moist substance.  Once they find a landing zone they can call home, it doesn’t take long for them to start colonizing and growing.  As a business, the best approach would be to get mold growth remediated before a guest complains or gets sick.  A few signs to be aware of are abnormal humidity, a moist and earthy or mildew smell, and even visible signs of growth.  However, as mentioned earlier, it’s not always easy to see the growth.  Mold can grow in wood, paper, fabrics, carpet, drywall, linens, foam, and more.  It’s important to take a proactive approach and make sure, at the very least, you don’t smell or see mold.

Ideally, you don’t want mold anywhere in your hotel and most certainly you don’t want it to affect your guest’s stay.  In the event your hotel encounters mold, these are a few signs your guests might present.  They may complain about an earthy or mildew smell, moist or humid air in the room, they could also have signs of cold-like or allergy symptoms.  Sometimes even skin rashes develop.  If these are things you hear from your guests, it’s best to get a mold inspection as soon as possible.
